During 3rd quarter, the students are given a design challenge to promote problem-solving skill and pre-engineering concepts. They design a car propelled by a simple mouse trap. The car was to travel as far as it can. If they get their car to go 30 feet, they are in the "A range" for their grade.
Concepts that are introduced include Archimedes' Simple Machines, Newton's Laws of Motion, and mechanical advantage. Students learn hands-on how work equals force times distance.
